Marlon Brando - One-Eyed Jacks (1961)

Directed by Marlon Brando (after Stanley Kubrick stepped out), Brando's only foray into directing resulted in quite an interesting film......often mean, moody, brooding........and somewhat offbeat.

The images and the landscape are gorgeous, quite beautifully shot by Charles Lang with spectacular panoramic views of Monterey, the Sierras, and the Mexican coastline.

The result, laced with some fine traditional sequences and stretches of masochistic violence, is a Western of remarkable power. ..with great performances from Brando, a memorably sadistic Karl Malden...the achingly beautiful Pina Pellicer...rounded out by Western film veterans Katy Jurado, Slim Pickens, and Ben Johnson.

One Eyed Jacks certainly has a place among the important bridges between the traditional Westerns of the 50's and the grittier style of the 60's.
