Barbet Schroeder - La vallée aka Obscured by Clouds (1972)
Filmmaker Barbet Schroeder explores themes of sexual freedom, mind alteration, and pursuit of paradise against the backdrop of an early 70's encounter with the Mapuga rain forest tribe in upland New Guinea.
I was somewhat disappointed in this film for several reasons. Chief among these is that, while friends "sold" me on this film be saying "and the MUSIC is by PINK FLOYD!!!", said music is mostly not present, and when it is is masterly semi-audible and of questionable relevance. The group's instrumental music has often struck me as potentially excellent for film use, but this potential has never, to my knowledge, been realized. The film as a whole is acceptably acted, visually and anthropologically not without interest, but the point it makes merely re-invents the wheel in my estimation. Some goodish character points are made along the way, but these are not worth the length and pretensions of the film either. A second-tote film, I think, blown out of proportion by fan/cultists.
