Peter Ustinov - Memed My Hawk (1984)

In 1984, Peter Ustinov wrote, directed, and starred in a film adaptation of Turkish author Yasar Kemal’s beloved classic novel Memed My Hawk (Ince Memed). The film was a financial flop, but it’s a fascinating (and rare) curio, with cinematography by the great Freddie Francis and music by Manos Hadjidakis (!) The film's country, for whatever reason, is identified as Yugoslavia. But one of the producers appears to be Turkish, and most of the cast and crew aare British. And the film is in English (in case you were unsure).

Ustinov himself plays Abdi Aga, Herbert Lom plays Ali Safa Bey, with Simon Dutton (who would go on to play The Saint in later years) as Memed.

Interestingly, the film is one of the reasons why the Turks themselves were never able to make a film version of Memed; apparently, Ustinov owned all film rights to the novel outside of Turkey, so another film version could not have been distributed abroad. My Hawk 1.avi My Hawk 2.avi
